Pinkeye-Help in a Flash

30 Jan

ImageRed eyes can be caused by a number of causes: virus, bacteria, allergies and irritation from chemicals.

Differentiating between the causes of pink eye can be very difficult.

Here are some tips that might help you distinguish:

Virus-Eyes are red and crusty.  This is the most common cause.

Bacteria-Eyes are red and crusty.  There is often more drainage and eyes are usually crusted in the morning (much less common than viral).

Allergy-Eyes are red and itchy.  There is usually clear drainage and involves both eyes.

Chemical-This is most common after swimming in chlorinated water.

Viral and bacterial pink eye are spread by touching surfaces that have been touched by the infected person.  Because of this, most children with pink eye should remain out of school until their eyes are improving.

Pink eye usually resolves on its own in 5-7 days.  Antibiotic drops are most unnecessary because most pink eye is caused by viruses.

The biggest issue regarding pink eye is washing the hands of the affected person as well as everyone around them and the surfaces that they commonly touch.
